Members of the Nuahala coop formed an agricultural cooperative after civil unrest in the 1980s caused them enormous economic hardships. There are 183 members of which 128 are women. Members are indigenous Mayan and speak Quiché and live and work on the steep slopes they harvest. The average farm size is less than 1 hectare. Nuahala promotes gender equality though specific training and the inclusion of their female members. They established the Café Feminino program in 2005.
